What Is This About?

The City of Thibodaux is holding a public hearing to discuss property tax millage rates—specifically, whether to:

  • Increase or add new property tax rates (millages) without asking voters, or
  • Adopt the adjusted rate after property value reassessment, and potentially roll it forward to match the maximum rate from the previous year.

Key Terms Explained

  • Ad Valorem Tax = A tax based on the value of property (land, homes, etc.).
  • Millage Rate = The tax rate used to calculate property taxes. One mill equals $1 of tax per $1,000 of assessed property value.
  • Reassessment = The state reassesses property values (usually every 4 years in Louisiana). If property values go up, the millage rate is typically adjusted downward unless the city votes to “roll it forward.”
  • Roll Forward = Choosing to keep the higher tax rate from before reassessment, which effectively increases your property taxes even if the millage rate number stays the same.

What the City May Do at This Meeting

They are considering:

  • Raising the millage rate (tax rate) above the adjusted amount, or
  • Keeping it the same as last year, even if reassessed property values mean this will raise your taxes.

They can do this without a vote from the public—but they must hold a public hearing to announce and explain it.

Why It Matters

This public hearing could directly affect your property tax bill in 2025. If the city rolls the rate forward or adds a new millage:

  • You may pay more in property taxes, even if your rate doesn’t look higher at first glance.
